Location / Demographics

The Tom Bean Independent School District is located about 10 miles southeast of Sherman, Texas, and about 50 miles north of Dallas on State Highway 11 just 8 miles east of US Highway 75.  The District encompasses 53 square miles in Grayson County.  Approximately 2500 people live in the District.

Enrollment

The District enjoys a teacher/pupil ratio of 1:11 and a computer/student ratio of 1:3. Approximate enrollment by campus: Elementary School (K-5): 350; Middle School (6-8): 210; High School (9-12): 290.

Student Ethnic ratio: White: 95%; Hispanic: 2%; Amer. Indian: 1%; Asian: 1%; African Amer.: 1%

Staff

TBISD has a highly qualified instructional staff of 76 members who have an average of 10 years teaching experience. Other employees include: classified personnel (maintenance, cafeteria, bus drivers): 31;  para-professionals (aides, secretaries, clerical): 22; totaling 129.

Curriculum

Elementary - The instructional program includes planned and systematic instruction with varied levels of challenge in the core subject areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Programs such as Title I Reading, Accelerated Reader, Gifted & Talented, Special Education, and computer skills are provided to assist students in excelling to their potential. Students may also participate in UIL academic events, choir, band, field trips, and theater productions. Counseling programs and peer mediation are utilized.

Middle School - At this transition stage, the middle school students are provided with a comprehensive academic instructional program in the subject areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Wilson Reading Program, Accelerated Reader, Gifted and Talented, Special Education, and computer skills are included for the varied needs of all students. Also provided are participation in UIL academics, choir, band, athletics, and SADD program.

High School -  This instructional program offers students an extensive academic study, complimented by appropriate electives. Course emphasis is on English, mathematics, science, and social studies, with other instructional opportunities in AP classes, Gifted & Talented, concurrent enrollment for college and high school credit, Special Education and school-to-work programs. Additionally, a variety of electives, extracurricular and UIL activities are offered. A distance learning lab has been implemented to enable students to gain both high school and college credit.

 

Departments / Services

Libraries: The future will require everyone to learn continually. The goal of the TBISD library program is to enable all students to be independent, life-long learners who are skilled users of information and ideas. The library program includes direct instruction in how to locate, use, and evaluate information. The use of technology for information-seeking constitutes an ever-expanding part of the library program as students learn to access data through the use of computers, to use word processing to convey information, and to use other applications of technology to organize, analyze, and present information. Each library media center includes an electronic materials catalog, access to online resources, and computers and other equipment for production of student work.

Technology: TBISD strives to provide a high quality of technology services to our students and staff. Technology has become part of our everyday life, and as we move into the next millennium Tom Bean ISD is preparing our students by integrating technology throughout the K-12 curriculum.  All classrooms and labs are equipped with high-speed connections to the Internet, and TBISD students are offered a choice of specialized technology courses to help prepare them for the future.

Food Service: Well-balanced breakfasts and lunches are served daily in all schools’ cafeterias. Free and reduced meals are available to students whose families meet federally established guidelines.  Applications are available in the principal’s office.  Lunch prices are $1.50(K-5) and $1.75(6-12). Breakfast is $.75(K-5) and $1.00(6-12).

Transportation: Bus services are available for students who live two or more miles from their assigned school and for students living within the city of Tom Bean.

 

Immunization Requirements

For the protection of children, state law and district policy require parents to provide proof that each student enrolled in school has been immunized for DPT, polio, hepatitis B, and measles/mumps/rubella, hepatitis A and chickenpox.
